An article in this month’s Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases shows how bariatric surgery can help the whole family. Mothers who had weight loss surgery were more likely to model healthy eating for their children than obese mothers who had not had surgery. They also demonstrated more restraint from eating unhealthy foods and were more likely to teach their children how to eat in a nutritious way. This study confirms others that show significant weight loss in family members of those who have had bariatric surgery. The decision to pursue weight loss surgery and to live a healthy lifestyle with nutritious eating and exercise can actually impact generations.
