You may have known that diabetic people who have bariatric surgery usually experience remission of their diabetes. But did you know that bariatric surgery also prevents people from ever getting diabetes in the first place?
A new study this week published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that weight loss surgery reduces the risk of developing diabetes by 78%. In a study with over 3000 participants, doctors compared a group patients who had bariatric surgery with another group of severely obese patients who were treated with conventional diet and exercise alone. The bariatric surgery group of people were 78% less likely to develop diabetes over a 15 year period.
The effects of bariatric surgery on diabetes and diabetes prevention are powerful and long-lasting. Just one more benefit of these procedures.
